How I Created A Lip Colour Company For Women of Colour

Being a woman of colour, and now living in North America, I noticed there is a lot of room for new ideas and products as there were far fewer options, and less brands catering to my skin tone. Continue here how and why I decided to start my own lipstick company and my journey as a beauty entrepreneur.

A Derm’s Favourites: My Favourite In-Office Procedures Based on Your Age

I’ve been using laser technology in my dermatology practice since the mid-1980’s and needless to say that I’ve pretty much seen and played with them all. My husband and I pooled our savings together to buy our first laser. It was this massive, hugely expensive machine but we felt it was worth the investment to be able to treat port wine stains and other vascular lesions. We now currently have about 20 different light-based systems in my practice, Laserderm TM, in Ottawa. They all offer a different type of precision and tailored results so I love that we can offer our patients the perfect customized solution for their needs. With that being said, here are some of my favourites based on your age range. Of course, it goes without saying that having a good skincare early on, will determine the level of photo and chronological aging that someone has and what level of intervention is needed on our part as well.

A Derm’s Favourites: Coping with COVID-19 and my daily routine

Coping with COVID-19: My adult children are separated from my husband and myself across Canada and the US.  I’ve been worried about my grandchildren especially.  I see how much their daily lives have been disrupted and how they are coping as best they can.  I’ve learnt first-hand the importance of keeping your routine. I’ve learned that in moments of crisis, keeping a semblance of a normal routine is so important for your mental health.  To that end, this is what I’ve been up to these past several weeks.

How to Buy Skincare for a Teenager

I know how hard it can be to set your teenager up with the ideal skincare routine. You want to get them started with good habits and preserve the health of their skin so their future self will thank you. How many skincare editors have thanked their mothers for passing on a love of sunscreen?

The teens and tweens of this generation are probably the most educated when it comes to skincare and beauty of any generation. I had a Clinique make-up counter as my first attempt at any kind of routine. This generation has daily Youtube how-to make up videos and shelfies to learn anything they could want. They are also incredibly ingredient conscious and altruistic when it comes to their environmental footprint.

When you add in typical skincare concerns like teenage acne, it's quite the set of criteria to build a clean, vegan and cruelty free but also effective yet simple skincare routine. Woof. However, I bet a lot of parents would kill to have a similar skincare routine. Believe it or not, there is room for you as a parent to make suggestions that your discerning teenager will appreciate and maybe even a couple of items you can share with them. Yay! A true win for all.

How to Work From Home, Keep Your Kids Occupied and Other Ideas

For the next couple of weeks at the least, there are going to be a slew of people working from home, participating in work-share programs with reduced hours, or having to stay home with their kids during the school closures. I’m not trying to pretend to have much in the way of counsel for those big ticket sources of anxiety. However, I am a pro at working from home so I thought I could share my two cents about best practices. Working from home can actually be tough mentally if you are not used to it. If you also have to add taking care of a young one, there is the practical problem of filling time. So here are my best tips for staying sane and for finding ways to entertain.

Why You Should Ignore Anyone Who Tells You to Have Unsafe Sun this Summer. The Myths about Vitamin D, sunlight and your overall health.

Every once in a while, an article on sunscreen use pops up and I get the dreaded feeling that it’s going to be a popular one.  Articles like these are especially problematic because they are on the surface, pretty persuasive. We’ve all seen many of these anti-sunscreen types of articles and I have the feeling it will become a trend this summer.  The problem is that it cherry picks facts throughout history and geography and misconstrues some essentials.  The real danger is when parents start making decisions for their young children based on this glib treatment of facts. These decisions can impact their child’s health for their entire life so it’s worth hearing the other side.  Here are just a couple of issues with this specific article but also the general argument on a whole:

The Story of Ava Isa

Tints and texture are all well and good but mean nothing if we didn’t bring our A game when it came to making Ava Isa protective.  First, it’s a true SPF 45.  It’s 15% zinc oxide, which in theory would not be able to get you an SPF 45.  Our patent pending innovation amps up our protection in both the UVB and UVA range.  We use a certified organic natural ingredient to help improve the dispersion of the zinc oxide to make it much more efficient.
